Abstract

The digital transformation has been encouraging the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by companies and governments. The context of the COVID-19 pandemic has boosted the use of AI and the citizen barely realizes that he interacts with smart systems all the time, whether it be a simple credit card purchase or receiving tips on his favorite streaming channel. This article discusses the AI usage and the social biases that may be contained in the huge mass of data used by intelligent systems and machine learning algorithms. The cases discussed reveal that it is necessary to recognize the distortions that the use of AI techniques not only exacerbates, but perpetuates, such as racial bias and inequality. Data are not neutral and record human decisions. Therefore, for conscious use, a multidisciplinary approach is essential, which includes specialists in Ethics, social scientists and specialists who understand the nuances of each application area of Artificial Intelligence.
