This manuscript brings to the reader the dimension of the influence of Cryptography as a fundamental tool in providing data security requirements. Using a colloquial description of cryptographic techniques and their applications, both traditional and contemporary, we seek to motivate the need for training students and professionals in the area, aiming to fill the enormous education gap observed in the market and, to a lesser extent, in academia. Cryptography is a sophisticated science with high mathematical content of almost immediate everyday applicability. New techniques can quickly evolve from specification to practice, limiting the time available to train personnel in charge of their use. The consequences of this mismatch can be severe, going from data leaks to possible million-dollar frauds, commonly without disclosure. In consonance with these objectives, we conclude the text with considerations about the practice and teaching of Cryptography.
