Abstract

This article presents a comprehensive assessment of the performance of Technology Innovation Centers (NITs) within Brazilian Federal Higher Education Institutions (IFES), focusing on their organizational structure, management practices, and innovation and entrepreneurship activities. Using a descriptive and quantitative approach, the study analyzes data organized into an interactive dashboard, revealing institutional weaknesses such as the absence of dedicated budgets and a lack of qualified human resources, which compromise the performance of these innovation environments. Best practices were also identified in intellectual property protection and engagement with innovation ecosystems. The discussion highlights the need to strengthen NITs, emphasizing the adoption of legal entity status (CNPJ), the creation of a dedicated innovation career path within IFES, and a more integrated role in innovation ecosystems. The study contributes to the enhancement of public policies aimed at academic innovation and proposes pathways to consolidate the role of NITs in Brazil’s reindustrialization process and in advancing the entrepreneurial university model.
