Experience Report: The Challenges of Implementing a Collaborative Innovation Ecosystem in a Multicampus and Multiregional University

Abstract

This report presents the experience of the State University of Paraná (Unespar) in implementing a collaborative innovation ecosystem across its seven campuses, located in different regions of the state. Led by the university's Innovation Agency, the initiative aimed to connect academia, industry, government, and civil society through a networked governance model that respects local specificities and fosters a culture of innovation. The process unfolded in five stages: expanding the former NIT, mapping local actors, establishing campus-based offices, structuring collaborative governance, and accrediting innovation environments. Key outcomes include the creation of nine innovation-promoting environments, organization of events, engagement of students and faculty, and partnerships with municipalities. Challenges included regional diversity and sustaining stakeholder engagement. The experience shows that innovation can thrive beyond major urban centers through decentralized and cooperative networks.
