Perceptions and Challenges Regarding Ethics in Artificial Intelligence: A Replication with Brazilian Professionals

Abstract

With the increasing adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across various sectors, there is a growing need to understand how AI professionals address ethical issues in the development of these technologies. This study aims to investigate Brazilian AI professionals' perceptions of ethics, as well as the main challenges they face when attempting to apply ethical principles in their daily practices. To this end, a replication study was conducted through a survey involving 39 AI professionals, with data collected between May 28 and July 1, 2025. Among the differences identified between the original study and this replication, one notable finding is that, while the primary source of knowledge about AI ethics in the original international study was the organizational environment, in Brazil learning occurred predominantly through academic education. Furthermore, the Brazilian context revealed a more pronounced lack of institutional support and a greater misalignment between organizational culture and ethical values. Therefore, the findings of this study may support future initiatives aimed at strengthening AI ethics in the Brazilian context.
