Abstract

In general, teaching Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) consists of the analysis and technological designs activities of interactive products. Yet, is it possible to teach HCI in an “unplugged” fashion where the computer is invisible to the student, as posed by Don Norman? This article presents a detailed account and methodology for a teaching experience where students were instructed to observe HCI aspects in a cultural space with artwork about the history of Brazil. 25 students visited the space to perform observations and fill out an observation form. Results show that a teaching methodology in a built space can help students develop educational competences in HCI and bring additional unexpected benefits by making students excited about the field of study and other areas such as art and history. The article describes the methodology at length so it can be replicated in other non-virtual contexts as an interaction metaphor to study HCI aspects.
