Systematic Mapping of the Literature on the Development of Accessible Digital Interfaces for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Abstract

This paper presents a systematic mapping study on the development of accessible digital interfaces for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), focusing on personalization strategies, sensory overload minimization, and the use of reusable components. The study was conducted based on the methodology proposed by Kitchenham and Charters (2007), including protocol definition, study selection criteria, and data analysis. A total of 795 studies were initially identified across relevant scientific databases, from which 21 primary studies were selected for final analysis. The results indicate that the most common approaches involve configurable user profiles, sensory stimulus control, and predictable interface elements. However, there is a lack of integration among these strategies, as well as limited adoption of more advanced adaptive technologies, such as artificial intelligence. Additionally, most studies present methodological limitations, including the absence of empirical validation in real educational settings. As a contribution, this work systematizes existing evidence and identifies research gaps, supporting the development of more accessible, adaptive, and user-centered digital interfaces for children with ASD.
